About
NewenglandWOW.com A
company in New London, Connecticut unabashedly promoting the people,
communities, organizations and independent businesses of the
real New England.
We went online on May 17, 2000
after nearly a year of planning and not just a little dice
rolling. With a few exceptions, the explanations below are still very current. We like to think that we are staying true
to form.
Celebrating
differences: pizza, North Dakota and the Internet
There are two
kinds of pizza in New England; the ones made by a small, often family
owned restaurant and the prefab variety sold by national chains. (We
don't count the stuff in the frozen food section of the supermarket.
That's not pizza.)
North Dakota
is a fine state but good pizza is not one of their strong suits. We
suspect that most of the pizza consumed there comes from the chains.
(The Little Italy section of Fargo is so small, we never found it.)
But in
Hartford, Providence, New Haven, Boston, Portland or just about any
city or neighborhood in New England and the variety of pizza is mind
boggling. Sure, we've got the national chains but why should we
settle for what they serve in Fargo?
New England
Wow is about local pizza. We're
also are about neighborhoods, theatres, art
and artists, businesses, community groups and history. We think that
knowing what came before makes us better people and helps us
understand who we are and where we are going.
We like things
that are different.
For
celebrating differences, the Internet is a two-edged sword. It allow
anyone to present an individual vision but it is increasingly
dominated by huge, one-size-fits-all media corporations. Often
individual messages are lost in the crowd or found only by a luck.
(We searched for Pizza in Hartford and came up with 3,342 hits.)
Which is our principle difference
from the big media outlets. We are about
New England, and only New England.
We concentrate
on what's unique about our region: the people, organizations,
businesses, communities and neighborhoods that can't be found
elsewhere on the planet.
Common
interests-no state lines
New England is a
relatively small place but finding information about New England on the internet
can
be daunting. States, regions and economic interests present
themselves on the Web and treat others-even the ones just down the
road-as poor relations, if at all.
We've changed
all that. We treat New
England as one great place.
Why
we promote Independent New England!
For our
company,
independence is where the rubber meets the road.
They days
when independent businesses provided everything a community needed
are over. Today, an independent business, especially those in
retailing, is a welcome exception to the one size fits all rule.
Thousands have closed down to be replaced by chain stores, malls and
more recently, huge internet firms.
But other
survive and flourish in New England despite intense efforts to put
them under. They keep plugging away and we want to help.
With a few
exceptions, the people, institutions, organizations
and businesses that we link and report on will call one of our New
England States "home."
We figure that
most of our visitors will have no trouble finding-or more ominously,
being found-the giants of the Internet.
What we hope to
do is make it a little easier for us "little people" to
enjoy New England.
That's what we
mean by Independent New England.
Sites
we will not link-The usual suspects.
Sites too
technical or specialized for our visitors will not be linked, unless
they are such a "knockout" that we just can't do without it.
We will also
not list sites that we don't want to promote. These include the usual
suspects that we'll not flatter by naming. They know who they are.
They'll have to peddle their wares or stupid ideas elsewhere.
Linking to
New England Wow-we're in this together

others will be prohibited for legal or business reasons. We suspect
that as we grow, some of these prohibitions may be lessened. But, the
more people who use New England Wow, the more likely that the sites
listed here will be visited.

Wow. We don't believe in taking ourselves too seriously but we do
appreciate smart, hard working people. We also like to have fun.
We are so new
at this, like everyone else, that we don't know exactly what we want.
While we don't expect to match the bucks of Bill Gates-there has to
be more to life-we do expect to make a buck or two from New England Wow.
No, we don't
have a lot of money-in fact, we'd love to hear from enlightened
investor-but we do have a piece of the pie to offer.
So make us an
offer we can't refuse or one we can. We are sure to need people who
know New England and have some understanding of the English language.
Yes, we could
use some technical people and some folks who have
sales
in their DNA.

you think. Where we have screwed up and where you think we should be
going. Can we do things easier or provide better services? What can
you do to help us and yourself?
