Attractions in New England

New England has a wealth of things to do, some of which are presented here.  Specific interests in the arts, theatre, outdoor activities and others are noted in other directories.

It's called America's Stonehenge and it is in North Salem, New Hampshire.  More accurately it is an archaeological excavation that may represent a human "settlement" in New England that could be more than 4,000 years old.  Open all year, the settlement is reached by navigating a trail and offers connections to stone age living, astronomy and art.  The site also has a latter day interest as it may have been a station used by slaves in the underground railroad.  See the site for hours, fees, directions and more.

Connecticut

The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk   Explore the marine life and maritime culture of Long Island Sound. Watch sharks, jellies, sea turtles, and more than 1,000 other marine animals. Or enjoy a film in Connecticut's only IMAX movie theater.

Mystic Seaport continues to be one of the most popular and unique tourist centers on the east coast.  

Mystic Aquarium is just off I-95 and has added many new attractions during a recent expansion. 

Foxwoods Resort Casino Connecticut's first and largest gaming and entertainment center started with a modest bingo hall.   Today Foxwoods can answer most requirements for gaming opportunities, concerts, sporting events, dining and luxury accommodations.   The nearby museum is spectacular as are the shopping opportunities.    

Mohegan Sun Casino  Visitors may note some modest construction going on.  Project Sunburst is transforming this formerly small, nearly homey casino, into one of the premiere gaming and entertainment destinations in the nation.  The new hotel is the second tallest building in Connecticut with 1,200 luxury suits and a casino in the sky. 

Aside from huge gaming opportunities, the center offers a full lineup of top name  entertainment-some for free-great restaurants and a unique offering of fine shops.

Gillette Castle and State Park, in East Haddam including the wonderful nature walks to the river.  The Castle and grounds were extensively renovated in 2002.

Maine

Cape Cod Central Railroad  is, strictly speaking, a railroad.   But the scenic landscape and grand food make their short, seasonal excursions something more than simple transportation.  The site includes directions, schedules and ticket information

Massachusetts

In December of 1891, James Naismith, a physical education instructor at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Mass., invented basketball. The rest, as they say, is history.  Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is open all year, except Christmas and Thanksgiving, and if you miss it on I-91, then you shouldn't be behind the wheel.

Boston Harbor Cruises offers whale watching, harbor cruises, charters and sight seeing in Boston Harbor, Provincetown and Block Island in Rhode Island.  The have "fast ferries" and high-speed catamarans.  .   

The Butterfly Place in Westford, is an indoor living environment which has been designed for the propagation and development of butterflies. A 3,100 sq. ft. glass atrium towers to a height of over 27 ft. and contains up to 500 butterflies representing as many as 50 different species.  There is a gift shop and urge visitors not to forget their cameras. 

Breezy Picnic Grounds Waterslides in Douglas, Massachusetts offers family fun on the Whitins Reservoir. Enjoy swimming in crystal-clear water, riding Alpine waterslides or try out the new Tunnel Twister Slide.  There is no limit for rides and the grounds are fine for just relaxing. 

Pirate’s Fun Park is in the heart of Salisbury Beach, Massachusetts. A traditional seaside amusement park, with 18 rides, including a go-kart
track and bumper boats. They've also an amusement game area.

The best place to see Boston! Nothing can top the view of Boston from the top of John Hancock. And nothing serves up more of the city, more breathtakingly than the John Hancock Observatory.

New Hampshire Happenings, from Manchester, provides a broad range of information on events, attractions, amusements, lodging and recreation centers in the state.  On the Internet since 1999, the attractive site offers searchable information for the entire state, or a specific region, and invites submissions with a handy and easy to use data form.  As they say, "A web-site that has fun things to do in New Hampshire! Check it out then share it with a friend!"

Squam Lakes Natural Science in Holderness, is a 200 acre nature center with four self-guided trails, boat tours, a Nature Store and hands-on exhibits.  Walk in woods to see black bears, otters, fox and more in trailside enclosures. 

Haunted Acres in Raymond, New Hampshire features a Haunted House, and Night Walk.  Located at Pine Acres Family Campground there is a count down, by the second, to Halloween.

Daniel Webster Birthplace is on 147 acres in Franklin, NH.  A New Hampshire State park, the site recounts the history of the man and the region.   Webster can claim two New England states as home.  He represented New Hampshire and Massachusetts in Congress.
