New England's  Book people

Bookstores, publishers, printers and people who work with books

Our region is home to some of the world's leading publishers as well as many small presses serving specialized needs.  We can also boast a goodly number of independent bookstores, still surviving despite the inroads of huge chains and online book buying, by providing unique and knowledgeable services to customers.

We provide this directory with the unabashed purpose of promoting New England's book people and hope it will inspire others to help keep our region's book business strong, vital and diverse.

Presented in no particular order

Bliss Publishing Company, Inc. of Marlborough, Massachusetts is a New England book publisher that publishes books about New England and New Englanders with an interest in the Native Americans, out door river adventures and New England's natural beauty.  The site includes recent books and ordering information.

Chip Fleischer, the publisher of Steerforth Press, recently did an Op-ed page piece for the New York Times on the books written by presidential candidates and relating their book sales to success at winning a party's nomination.

Steerforth Press is in South Royalton, Vermont and among their books is the one pictured here, of a former Vermont Governor who just might be on his way to pulling a Clinton.

As least his book is selling well.

The Harvard Common Press is in Boston and concentrate their publishing efforts on books about our region, cooking, parenting, and childbirth books.  The site includes attractive selections of current offerings and while they encourage trade with local booksellers, they do offer phone and email purchasing.

Tatnuck Bookseller & Sons  is a grand "independent" bookstore and restaurant in Worcester, Massachusetts.   Founded more than 25 years ago by team of Larry and Gloria Abramoff; their passion for books and the people who read them has grown into a nationally recognized business.  Offering a wide selection of books-bestsellers, classics, self-help, politics, cooking, gardening, science, nature, humor, travel-they specialize in getting that "hard to find" volume that are often in stock or in by the next business day.  A "mall-ternative," in the New England tradition.

William L. Bauhan, Publisher has been publishing quality books about the New England Region since 1959.  With offices in a century-old barn in Dublin, New Hampshire, company specializes in history, art, nature studies and poetry.  Fittingly, they have on display a desk from one of our more famous transplanted Yankees, Mark Twain.

Bear Pond Books is, as one might expect, a seller of books.  From their attractive store in Montpelier, VT  the offer a complete line of publications and offer services for locating hard to find books.  Customers may also be interested to know that the records of purchases made at the store are purged and thus can not be retrieved for subsequent investigation.   To quote for the site...

U.S.A. PATRIOT ACT: Dear Readers' Club Members: In response to Section 215 of the U.S.A. Patriot Act, all titles listed in Readers' Club accounts have been deleted from our computer as of January 24, 2003 to protect customers' privacy.

While not exactly an independent publisher, The Countryman Press was revived by Peter and Jane Jennison in the early 1970s.  Their success in putting quality books into the hands of inventive and dedicated booksellers from their headquarters in Woodstock, Vermont was recognized by the W.W. Norton publishing house.  In 1996 Norton bought The Countryman Press but the storied history of independence goes on.
