was one of the first parts of the country to embrace public
broadcasting.
Despite the huge media center near the
region, Public Radio is an important element to life here. Most stations offer local
news, programming schedules, upcoming events and an email address to
contact them. Many are linked to National
Public Radio.

Democracy Now!
can be heard on may radio stations in New England. It is an
entirely independent news program hosted by journalists Amy Goodman
and Juan Gonzalez who daily cover stories and reports that large news
organizations either overlooked or, perhaps for political reasons,
fail to find newsworthy. The program can be heard online.
Connecticut
WESU Free-Form
Radio broadcasts from Wesleyan University in
Middletown, Connecticut and is one of the oldest stations
of its kind in the country. Started in 1939, the station has a
decided eclectic bent although recently it has been suggested, with
some controversy, that it become more closely affiliated with
National Pubic Radio via a relationship with WSHU in Fairfield,
Connecticut. Truthfully described as a
"Free-Form" station, it is a welcomed oasis from the
prepackaged fare already dominating the radio dial.

Fine Arts Radio
is small station but they have a fine staff and offer 24 hours of music, seven day a week.
With local feeds for clear, crisp reception in Connecticut and parts of

Connecticut Public Broadcasting
Inc. is the parent company of Connecticut Public Television and Connecticut Public Radio.
They produce many quality programs locally and have an elaborate
network that cover most if not all of the state. They are
also in the process, as of 2001, of moving their broadcasts into
digital technology.
WWUH
is a small station from the University of Hartford but it has a long
history of community service and involvement. Relying mostly on
volunteer staff, the station is one of the key "independent"
stations in the Greater Hartford area providing a broad range of
music, news and public affairs programming. Listen online
WNHU-FM
is a non-commercial, educational
radio station from the University of New Haven. It offer
more than 20 hours of programming every day and importantly, it serves
as creative training ground for students with an interest in
broadcasting, music, marketing and mass communications. The
station is staffed primarily by UNH undergraduates, assisted by
faculty members, and is a refreshing change from the
predictable. While they do not broadcast online, their signal
extends down to the New York boarder, to Long Island and well up
Connecticut shore. They also welcome requests by phone at

questions.

Public Broadcasting works out of sites in Portland, Lewiston and
Bangor and covers the entire state with radio and TV
broadcasting. They are in the process of upgrading their online
services with the introduction multimedia that should be available in

Massachusetts
WHHB,
99.9 FM, a Non-Commercial, Educational, Class D, FM radio station
operated by Holliston High School students
from studios Holliston High School in
Holliston, Massachusetts. WHHB transmits with an effective
radiated power of 17 Watts from facilities provided by Cingular
Wireless. This attractive site includes staff photographs,
contact and play request information and a broadcast schedule.
Allston-Brighton
Free Radio is
a public access radio station that operates under the non-profit
umbrella of Citizens' Media Corp. They broadcast from studios
on Cambridge Street in Allston, Massachusetts on the dial at 1670 AM
during the week and on Sunday nights on WJIB 740AM with a decided
"non corporate radio" flair. (They offer baseball
shirts for sale with these sentiments, less subtlety stated.)
They offer a platform for the people of the community-many of whom
have little access to other forums-and seek to communicate ideas and
cultural expressions, freely over the airwaves. Broadcasting
