New Englanders with a passionate interest 

 

Agriculture

Order of Patrons of Husbandry, known as the National Grange, was founded on December 4, 1867 in Washington by William Saunders, Superintendent of Propagating Gardens in the Department of Agriculture.  Today the Grange is the nation’s oldest national agricultural organization, with a presence in 3,600 communities and 300,000 members in 37 states.   New England State Granges with their own web site include, Connecticut State Grange Massachusetts State Grange New Hampshire State Grange and Vermont State Grange.

 


Chess 

With apologies to Harvard's leadership, women have achieved some modest success in fields previously known for masculine predominance.   Susan Polgar is one of chess's few Grand Masters who started the Susan Polgar Foundation to promote chess and chess playing, especially among girls and women.  While not from New England, (New York no less) we New Englanders have been know to sit at a board, working on our end game.

The United States Chess Federation is the national chess organization with important national and international news about chess playing.  

The Metro West Chess Club is the largest weeknight chess club in New England out of Natick, MA.

The Massachusetts Chess Association, an affiliate of the USCF is a non-profit organization.

Hyannis Chess Club plays, naturally, one would think, from Hyannis, MA.

Although different game from chess, players at the New England Backgammon Club  take their competitions just as seriously.  The Club meets at the Holiday Inn, in Somerville, Massachusetts.

 

Breeds...

The New England Old English Sheepdog Rescue, does what it says, rescues the dog from harm. 

The Irish Setter Club of New England, Inc. from West Greenwich, RI. 

Yankee Golden Retriever Club an interesting site, like the animal, with an extensive events listing for New England.    

Tom Pollard is from Massachusetts and he runs a site that's all for the dogs....of a particular breed.  New England Saint Bernard Club  A word of caution, use the mute or you'll hear the barking.

Great Dane Club Of New England  has an obvious interest in promoting the grand canine but it also has a hard and fast Code of Ethics on the raising, treatment and purchase of Great Danes.  They treat the ownership of these animals with a seriousness that the responsibility should entail. As they say in on the highly informative page on acquiring a Great Dane, " buying a Great Dane is not a decision to be taken lightly."   

 

The Club runs a Great Dane Rescue from members in West Tisbury, Massachusetts and holds Shows and Matches throughout the year.

Then there is The Collie Club of New England, the Dalmatian Club of Southern New England, the West Highland White Terrier Club of New England and the New England Sled Dog Club.

On the Air...

The National Association for Amateur Radio (ARRL) headquartered in Newington, Connecticut was founded in 1914 as the American Radio Relay League by Hiram Percy Maxim of Hartford.  Today the non profit group has over 160,000 members nation-wide and maintains international ties to hundreds of thousands of "hams" in over 150 countries.  While full membership is granted to fully licensed radio amateurs, the organization welcomes all with an interest in radio communication by becoming an Associate Member in ARRL.  The site includes technical radio news, legislative information and radio events of note for hams.

The New England Division of The American Radio Relay League works to promote and organize ham radio clubs in the region.  They also can assist people wanting to know  how to pass the licensing examination.

Stamford Amateur Radio Association meets every month in Connecticut to compare news and notes on this changing and growing mode of communication.  Meeting notices are posted on the site and all are welcome.

In and on New England's water...

The American Schooner Association in Mystic, Connecticut is an organization which fosters, promotes and encourages interest in the preservation, traditions and enjoyment of schooner and traditionally rigged vessels. The ASA accomplishes these goals by providing a record of these vessels past and present, and coordinating a program of cruising and racing.

The Boston Harbor Sailing Club was started in 1974 to make sailing an affordable pastime for the public and today they have a true "fleet" of over 60 boats ranging is size from just over 20 feet long to much larger yachts. 

Instructors hold appropriate Coast Guard licenses in particular specialty-Basic Keelboat, Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Charting to name a few-preparing student for certification with the American Sailing Association and employment with charter companies, government agencies and others.  The site includes class offerings, employment opportunities, plans for a new clubhouse on the harbor and membership options to suit individual needs and interests. 

 

And more Earthbound...

New England Fly Tyers is a non-profit that seeks to foster the art of fly tying, fly fishing and to encourage sportsmanship in this grand outdoor activity.  They also encourage the conservation of  New England's natural fish habitats.   

The Maine Morgan Horse Club is a non-profit organization that is an official chapter of the American Morgan Horse Club and an affiliated organization of the Maine Equine Industry Association. 

The Horsemen's Guide is a 52-56 page newspaper focusing on horses in New England and Eastern/Central NY. Circulated (FREE) at your tack shop, feed store, equestrian barns. 

New England Dressage Association for key information about the equestrian community in the region.

The National Rifle Association has affiliated chapters in all New England States but we were only able to find two with web pages.  Each has a good listing on what each is doing and upcoming events of note for shooting sports enthusiasts.

Gun Owners' Action League is the Massachusetts chapter


The New England Botanical Club and New England Rose Society are fine sites for information about making our soil work.

To record our works for pleasure or history, the Camera Clubs of New England  offers links to local clubs and The New England Camera Club Council, Inc. has information for local camera buffs.

New England Horseshoes contains a complete listing with links to  state and local clubs, events, rankings and tournaments.  Many are scheduled a year in advance.   

The 2001 New England Horseshoes Championship was held in Keene, New Hampshire in September.


In the air and sky...

The Aero Club of New England was established in 1902 and as such is the oldest aeronautical club in America and the second oldest in the world.

Vermont Hang Gliding Association is a group of hang gliding and paragliding pilots that enjoy flying off the mountains of Vermont and New England.  The offer information and connections for beginners to experts.  There is also an interesting section on the state laws and rules that Hand Gliders must follow.  The site has some fine photographs of people doing what hand gliders do.
