New England Communities Online

Over 550 cities, towns and villages!

These sites vary in style and content but all offer insight into what the locals think about their community.   Some communities have merged to form a regional statement while others rely on business groups, libraries and individuals to represent themselves on the Internet.

Don't disregard the library pages.  Many provide little known information about a community and some have valuable research tools, especially for tracing name or family roots.   Many are happy to respond to questions via email or snail mail.

Did we miss your New England Community?  Send it in, with a brief site description, to the Add a site email link, above.  And thanks.

The Electronic Valley represents the communities of Connecticut's lower Naugatuck River Valley: Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton.  But don't take our word for it.  In 2000 the Naugatuck River Valley was named an All-American City.  This attractive site offers lots of information and links on the area and has photographs of many of the people who makes this valley a great place to visit.

The Millicent Library in Fairhaven offers much more than books-it is the focus for much of what goes on in the coastal community and its web site represents the community on the Internet.  The library offers arts exhibits, book discussions with authors and experts on books and publishing, news on local community events and wonderful information on the community's history.  Fairhaven was the home of oil industrialist Henry Huttleston Rogers who built the Library, High School and the Town Hall and who entertained Mark Twain in his 85 room mansion in town and helped the author weather a financial storm.  Another fascinating story at the site is how Fairhaven and New Bedford became Sister Cities with the Japanese community of Tosashimizu -the story starts with a shipwreck in 1841.  The site is easy to explore and well worth a visit, just like the community.

Ossipee has 4,211 people and a wonderful "official" Internet site. If you live in Ossipee, or even if you don't, you can find out who to call in town hall, when meetings will take place and easily find phone numbers, names and address of the people who work-as employees or volunteers-for the community of Ossipee.  But visitors to the community can also view wonderful pictures of residents-at meetings, working fire fighting equipment or just enjoying their fine New Hampshire place-and plan a walking tour of historic Ossipee with the online map.  They also have good information and links on things to do, local organizations and businesses in town.  The County seat of Carroll County, they are putting the technology of the Internet to very good use.   Also of interest at the site is the Ossipee Historical Society in Center Ossipee, which is open from May to the end of October.
Pelham

"Incorporation of Pembroke was granted on November 1, 1759, "authorizing the levying and collecting such Province Tax as shall be imposed upon them by law as any other Town or Parish in this Province." On the passage of the act of incorporation, the Plantation of Suncook ceased to be and the Town of Pembroke took her place in the fair sisterhood of the Commonwealth of New Hampshire to enjoy all the rights and privileges belonging to towns."

From the town's page.  Today they say, Prosper in Pembroke, and they have a point.  An attractive, informative site that is fun to read and explore; much like the town.

Peterborough

If you want to know about Plymouth, New Hampshire you could move there or you could visit Plymouth Interactive.   A community web site with a local commercial emphasis, the service includes tour information, a good business listing, links and news on community organizations, upcoming events in Plymouth and if that's not enough, a live web cam.

Portsmouth
Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce

Pro Portsmouth is a well named and useful site about the historic seacoast community on that small, but beautiful slip of land that is New Hampshire's ocean shoreline.   The non-profit is a driving force in promoting the community's artistic and business sectors-they have a very good, and current, calendar of events-and it produces a series of annual community festivities including First Night Portsmouth, the Winter Solstice Celebration, Children's Day and Market Square Day- one  of the largest community celebrations in of northern New England.  The site is attractive, easy- to- use and an excellent resource to plan a visit.
