Acorn Antiques at Acorn Bed and Breakfast in Killingworth, Connecticut offers fine antiques in a marvelous rural setting.  

Want an ancient, claw-foot tub or a phone booth from the fifties?  Give Vermont Salvage a try.   Architectural Salvage is what they do and their two huge centers in White River Junction, Vermont, and Manchester, New Hampshire are part warehouse, museum and social center (especially on Saturdays).  The vast and varied retrieved remnants from New England's homes and buildings are, for many, the building blocks for new homes or newly discovered treasure with a particular pedigree.  They welcome inquiries at the site or by calling 802) 295-7616.

J.M. Sarnik & Sons operate The Old General Store at 1140 Main St in Coventry, Connecticut.  They offer a good variety of antique furniture, many of which are pictured at the site and they can arrange for shipping within 200 miles of Coventry.  While their inventory changes frequently, collectors of Coke products will want to explore the large collection they recently acquired.  The Coke collectables consist of licensed products and the harder to find Coke produced merchandise and displays.  Normal store hours are Wednesday to Friday 12:00 till 5:00 and Saturday and Sunday 9:00 till 5:00.  Appointments are welcome.  The site includes directions, a good photograph of the store and contact information.

Collectics Antiques and Collectibles was started in 1998 by Karen Lee in Greenwich, Connecticut and it has become a key resource about antiques and collectibles.  The site offers varied selection of things to view and buy- Vintage Kitchenware, Pottery, lamps, period jewelry, memorabilia, books, to name a few-with an eclectic bent towards Art Deco and Art Nouveau.

 

Ms. Lee's monthly Web Log and Journal may be of special interest.   She candidly dissects many of the major exhibitions in the region and highlights upcoming events in the world of antiques, art and other things that may be somewhat less grand but collectable.  

The site is exceedingly well researched, attractive and easy to navigate.  Offerings are thumb nailed for viewing and there are very good informational sections on a wealth of selected topics.  Viewers can complete a monthly quiz-a gift certificate can be won just by entering-and there are bountiful links to other sites of interest.  And of course, one can buy online.

Curiositique is a gift shop in Bath, Maine that specializes in offering antiques, fine art and a wide selection of interesting things of special appeal to those with an appreciation for the eclectic.  By no means a collectable shop, they offer fine furniture from the 18th Century, jewelry, decorative arts and things that defy the typical boundaries of classification.  They are of course available to purchase that special item and they offer an appraisal service for fine art.  Curiositique is at 38 Center Street, in Bath.  Call, 207-442-8753 or see the site.

Maps of the Past is operated by the Reid and Wright Antiquarian Bookstore in New Preston, Connecticut.  It offers maps of New England that can be purchased online.

Heavenly Treasures is an internet based antique store in South Portland, Maine.  Gary Worthing, the proprietor, displays some of his current offerings on the site and is interested in purchasing quality antiques as well.  

Royal and Ellen Feltner have been wholesale dealers of antiques and rare collectable for over forty years. The proprietors of  Ellroyal Antiques in Amesbury, Massachusetts; they specialize in Victorian furniture and accessories with a strong emphasis on attractive, period collectables, much of which has a pronounced New England flavor, to nineteen-forties.  Their large inventory of furniture, clocks, glass, china and lamps is handsomely previewed at the site and includes a fascinating display of jars and containers used to sell peanut butter and other staples.   Also noted at the site is that Amesbury was home to the world's largest carriage maker from 1850-1915.  We didn't know that.   The site also contains a link to Newenglandwow.com.  

Since 1992 the New England Collectibles Exchange has been helping collectibles sellers find buyers for their pieces.  From Clarksburg, Massachusetts they offer a wide variety of collectibles and ship to just about anywhere.

Smugglers' Notch Antique Center is run by the Kelley and Bette Mann.   Truly an antique "center" they offer the finds from 35 antique dealers in a converted dairy barn, a country store featuring Vermont made gifts and crafts and a huge selection of scoop-able penny candies. On Rt. 108 in Jeffersonville, they also offer an "evolving" Art Gallery from the state artists.

Stowe Vermont Fine Craft Gallery - Interior Design Center is owned by artist Susan Bayer Fishman who has combined the work and skills of local artists to offer an array of fine art, crafts and interior design.   

The Art of Life is a collaborative venture by artists Bonnie Lee Turner and Charles Clifford.  Working from Lincoln, Rhode Island they offer an interesting mix of murals, mosaics, portraits (including Ghandi and Mother Teresa among many others who are lesser known) and paintings.  A full service arts company that has worked extensively with prominent non-profit and commercial interests in Southern New England, their services are tailored to particular needs and come with a guarantee.

Valerie Hill is a photographer from Whitefield, New Hampshire with a special interested in and talent for portraying  the New England countryside and images that can only be see here.  Her site, Photo-Sensitivity, offers note cards, a fine gallery of recent photographs and interestingly, seasonal views of the late, The Old Man of the Mountain, who took his last view of the White Mountains in the Spring of 2003.   Photographs may be purchased at the site and conveniently, a variety of mats and frames can be selected to suit individual taste or decor.

Fiddlehead Studio in Massachusetts is a sales outlet for New England Artists.  Among their offerings are photographs, stained glass, wind chimes, pottery and quilts; all of which may be viewed and purchased online.

There are some great photographs of vintage electronic devices at Antique Radio Restoration & Repair, many of which include the owner, Bob Eslinger of Pomfret, Connecticut.  Decades ago these relics represented "cutting edge" technology that was combined with the more traditional skills of woodworking and cabinet making.  

Eslinger takes a soup-to-nuts approach to the restoration process, working both the electronic and crafting requirements that many of these machines require.  He services all tube type radios including those made in Germany and Canada and also works on automobile radios, amplifiers and large, floor consoles.  His work has attained a national following among collectors and has been the subject reports in prominent New England publications. 

Visitors, even those without radio problems, are welcome to browse around his shop at 20 Gary School Road in Pomfret Center.  The site includes links to other antique radio sites and, if your speakers are on, music.

For the Home 

New England Accents sells items for the home and especially the garden to regional retail outlets and stores.  They have begun offering a monthly sales event at their warehouse in Leominster, Massachusetts for overstock and specialty items to the general public, all of which are offered at a substantial savings over regular retail prices.  While their site is targeted to other retailers, everyone with an interest in good quality, hand-crafted "things" designed and built to last will find the site and the company worth a visit.  

Fixtures Etc! is a store in Salem, New Hampshire specializes in providing just about everything for the well appointed kitchen or bath.  Their top-quality offerings include distinctive plumbing fixtures, cabinets, counter tops and a wide selection of stone tile.

Donna Palmer started Sweet Creations in Branford, Connecticut in 1999 looking to take an interest and turn it into something with a little more substance, as in profit.  Sweet Creations has evolved into a thriving-with near landmark status in the Branford community-to the extent that Sweet Creations, an LLC no less, offers an array of treats suitable for the most discriminating, for purchase online.   Special order are welcome and actively encouraged.  

At Rick's Lobster Shack in Falmouth, Maine, they've eliminated the middleman.  Offering lobsters, complete lobster dinner packages, clams, mussels and the accoutrements associated with Maine's coastal bounty-ordered online and delivered to your door-they sell what catch.  A relatively new business, since 1999, shipping costs are included in the price.   The site includes recipes, some interesting related links and easy-to-use order forms.

Since 1980 The Connecticut Cane and Reed Company has been helping people repair and maintain their chair seating, basketry and wicker furniture.   They have a small store in Manchester and an extensive Internet site.   Offering  Amish and Shaker products, How To books and wholesome foods, secure purchases can be made online. 

Doug & Connie Hamel specialize in Shaker furniture and accessories from their picturesque shop in Chichester, New Hampshire.   They've been consulting, appraising and selling these highly prized examples of unique craftsmanship for over 35 years.  The site is updated frequently with new Shaker offerings available for purchase.  Enquiries are welcome.

Mountainspun Fiber Arts Eweporium is a Shetland Sheep Farm in Mt Snow Valley, Vermont They provide just about everything-from the actual animals to wheels and equipment-that weavers and creators of hand woven crafts will need to make clothing, quilts and other home accents.  They also offer instruction in the fiber arts and their sheep is also available to those wishing to establish their own "natural fiber" factory..  

Pachamama, from the Quechau language, has many meanings-Mother Earth-Mother Time-Mother Universe-all of which seems to fit the wares and philosophy of this store and leaning center in Concord, New Hampshire.  Opened in December 1998, its mission has been to offer spirituality and healing to both the body and soul.

Offering over 200 kinds of herbs, singing bowls, drums, ritual and reiki tools, candles, books, oils, tarot decks...to name a few...they also offer a varied schedule of classes  and workshops taught by a dedicated cadre of professionals.   The site includes a monthly calendar of upcoming events, directions and a fine photograph of Sterling, their laid back Springer Spaniel.  Credit cards, mail and phone (603-226-0716) accepted.  They say they are New Hampshire's largest metaphysical store, and we've no reason to doubt them.

Misty Meadows, in Lee, New Hampshire offers workshops, herbs and has a reading room.  They also offer reki sessions.

Nautical equipment

One can almost smell Maine's sea air at the China Sea Marine Trading Co. in Portland, Maine.  Steve Bunker and Sharon Bondroff, are outfitters of nautical equipment and paraphernalia that include navigational instruments, clocks, telescopes, shiplights, bells, anchors and a host of things to put on ones back, coffee table or wall.  The handsome shop on Dana Street, is part museum and hardware store that beckons to an earlier age when Yankees went to the sea in ships.
