On the issues of media ownership and the free press in New England

free press mediareform.net

Free Press was launched in December 2002 by author and professor Robert W. McChesney, working in close collaboration with journalist John Nichols and campaign finance advocate Josh Silver.

Media reform is a complex subject involving the intersection of concerns, policy initiatives and social agendas; thus negotiating the thicket of background materials can be a challenge. Free Press has compiled educational resources with the goal of making it easier to understand the what and why of a variety of media issues. Included here are books, reports, articles and websites helpful in explaining different activist issues.

The American Society of Newspaper Editors was established in 1922 as a professional organization for directing editors of newspapers.  Today membership is confined "generally" to editors, executive editors, managing editors and editorial page editors who hold positions that involve editing, managing, hiring, firing and setting editorial policy.

Two aspects of this site include The Project for Excellence in Journalism and the Committee of Concerned Journalists.  The site and the related groups provide a forum to address important issues on the current state of American journalism its future.  While developed by an for professional journalists-content includes professional standards, ownership of media centers and the relationship of journalists with the public-there is also a wealth of information for non journalists on working with news organizations.  Importantly, they seeks to open up the news gathering process to the public with tips on writing press releases and having them actually read by editors and the best ways to have journalistic concerned aired at news centers.

New England's Online Publications

Connecticut

Connecticut Post is the major southern Connecticut daily from Bridgeport.  Good local emphasis, if in the shadow of New York.

Fairfield Citizen-News is a weekly owned by MediaNews Group, Inc that also publishes the Darien News-Review, the Norwalk Citizen-News and the Westport News.  Most offer coverage of local events and happenings.

Connecticut Magazine comes out every month and both the publication and the web site are decidedly uncontroversial.   Offering restaurant reviews, shopping tips and entertainment suggestions for the state's middle and upper crusts, the site is well designed and informative.

The Hartford Courant (the link here if for CTNOW) is owned by the Tribune Company from Chicago has given up most of its online presence.  At its site, ctnow.com, reports and news from the paper are represented in a packed format developed by MyWay, Corporation.   The Courant still has an official Internet site at The Hartford Courant, that contain little actual news although it does offer a good listing of email addresses for Courant staff, reporters and management.

The Courant also owns three weekly papers in the state.

The Hartford Advocate
Fairfield County Weekly
New Haven Advocate

Each has an obvious similarity, typical for chain newspapers, but they do provide good entertainment news and reviews for their respective areas.

The Danbury News-Times reports on the
western Connecticut.  The site is somewhat late in reporting from the print edition.
The Day of New London is a truly a independent daily for
Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Greenwich Times cover the Town and lower
Fairfield County six days a week.

New Haven Register is the largest daily in a chain of newspapers in the state.  As with each, the site and news does have a local slant but each feeds the others resulting in a common look and read.  Other members of the chain include;

The Bristol Press

The Middletown Press

The New Britain Herald

The Manchester Journal Inquirer

The Torrington Register Citizen

The River Edge Record says it is "a web magazine and a reason to live."  That it is at times a somewhat irreverent magazine there is no doubt.  As to being a reason to live, well, we'll let you be the judge.  From the streets of Downtown New London with news, a few political statements, art, photos (a slow loader) and poetry.
The New London Gazette is an independent monthly that is all about
New London events and history.  The web site is both informative and attractive, although it is not, strictly speaking, a newspaper.
The Waterbury Republican-American  from
Waterbury is a daily with good local coverage in an attractive site.
Willimantic Chronicle has been around since 1877.  They present the area with an emphasis on community service and less on the news.

Three of the state's most important business papers are;

Hartford Business Journal
New Haven's Business Times
Commercial Record
This publication cover the state's real estate industry and related interests.

The Greater New Milford Spectrum, A community weekly with an events listing.

The Newtown Bee is a weekly with good reporting on what's going on in Newtown.
The Redding Pilot is part of a small chain of newspapers papers putting out weeklies in the state.

The Resident comes out every other week with "good" news about Eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island.
The Ridgefield Press  made the news on its own from Sony Pictures Entertainment.  It seems that two members of the advertising department, working to promote a new movie, fabricated a review from the paper.  Since the discovery of the phony review, the Press's movie reviewer has been interviewed by the national press and the newspaper has gained real notoriety.  The Press is part of a small chain of newspapers that covers many communities in the state.
Vernon, The Reminder
Weston, The Forum
Wilton, The Bulletin
UCONN  (Storrs) Campus
Connecticut College (New London), College Journal
Connecticut College (New London), College Voice

Hartford, The Informer
The Argus is the student paper from
Wesleyan University in Middletown
Western Connecticut State (Danbury): Echo
Yale (New Haven) The Herald
Yale (New Haven) The News

Massachusetts

Although not a newspaper in the strictest sense, The American Prospect (TAP) has been providing a refreshing alternative to packed, "me too" journalism and commentary since 1990.  Published in Boston and officially a non profit entity; the magazine is not coy about its liberal leanings or suggesting-often loudly-that today's accepted dogma is just so much malarkey.  While Rush Limbaugh fans may have trouble digesting the offerings-as other may with editorial page of the Wall Street Journal-the magazine provides hearty sustenance for those who dine using their left hand.

They welcome unsolicited contributions, although they encourage brief query letters first and the site includes an archive of past work, forums, book reviews, how to subscribe or donate to the organization online and an email newsletter.

Rhode Island

The Providence Journal made the news itself recently when they cut more than 90 jobs at the newspaper.  The paper can trace its history in Rhode Island to 1820 and was independently owned until 1996 when A.H. Belo Corp. of Dallas which owns Dallas Morning News, among other holdings, acquired it by a merger.  Still the state's largest newspaper, the site is attractive, easy to use and provides breaking news and features.

S. J. Perelman was born in Brooklyn on February 1, 1904 but grew up in Providence, Rhode Island where he attended but didn't graduate from Brown University.   The lack of academic credentials didn't seem to mar Perelman's creativity as he went on to write the Marx Brothers movie classics Horse Feather and Monkey Business and later Around the World in 80 Days.

Perelman wrote and edited Brown's student humor magazine, the Brown Jug. Founded in 1920, it is still carrying on the bold tradition blazed by the likes of Perelman.  Click the logo to see for yourself.
