Under One Sky is an information board for outdoors recreation opportunities in New England and our nearby Canadian neighbor provinces.  Well worth a visit if one is oriented into orienting and the like, or a couch potato with ideas to the contrary.

 

Racing Ahead, Inc. is a company in Bethel, Maine that was founded by the husband and wife team of Tracyn Thayer & Norm Greenberg.  While married to each other, each has a strong relationship with the great outdoors and getting from point A to B faster than others. Founded while they were organizing Appalachian Extreme Adventure Race, they offer instruction on mountain biking, rafting and other modes of transportation used in Adventure racing as well as an up-to-date news on races in New England and elsewhere. 

 

 

Bicycle Clubs

The Eastern Fat Tire Association promotes and sanctions mountain bike races and recreational bicycle "fun" rides on New England.  A nonprofit, the site has an extensive event and race listing.

The Charles River Wheelmen  is a group of active cyclists in the Boston area.

Granite State Wheelmen is a very active club in New Hampshire.

The Narragansett Bay Wheelmen is a bicycle club serving Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.

If you know the answers to these question, you don't need to visit Peakbagging in New England.  But if you don't but want to find out why so many people enjoy New England's views from "up top" then you might want to hit the screen before you do the trails.  A guide to peakbagging in the Northeast, with emphasis on New England (New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont), the site includes a lists of peaks, notes on getting to them and lots of information and links about "taking the darned hill."

Camping New England is a relatively new site started by Eric and Cathleen Bruni. Still in the building stage, they are developing a information source about outdoor activities in New  England including campground directory, marketplace, product reviews and recreation links.

Outdoor New England, edited by Marie Lillian Plasse of Massachusetts, provides original reports and stories on the life and times of New England's natural beauty.  The site includes attractive reproductions for purchase, hints on camping, updates on things to do in New England and links other national and regional outdoor sites. 


AlpineZone.com offers information about skiing and snowboarding in New England. They also offer information on hiking and backpacking in Vermont and New Hampshire's Green and White Mountains, the Berkshires of Massachusetts and trails in Connecticut and Maine.  The site has a message board, weather data and search program.

That's Camping in the Northeast-Campground reviews and information on what people have to say about camp facilities in New England and New York.  Conveniently listed by state, viewers can research what others had to say about a particular campground before they make the journey and all are invited to pass on their reviews to help others.   A useful site for the experienced campers as well as those just starting out, the site includes a suggested packing list and things to consider about making a camping decision.  Debbie and Mike, from Massachusetts, run the site that includes a good form for sending in a review.

Cross Country Skiing in New England  

New England Dressage Association for  the equestrian community.

Catamount Trail Association has worked to create and maintain the Catamount Trail in Vermont.  Now over 300 miles for cross-country skiing and snow shoeing!

The New England Ski Guide is a very good, state by state, directory of skiing facilities.   They provide a brief review of each center, give prices and provide local links of interest. 

Striped-Bass.Com has an extensive compilation of fishing events, locations and news for the New England Sport Fisherman, or women.

Department of Environmental Protection  Great deal-The DEP car pass is $35 and provides unlimited access to the State's parks and beaches for a year.   They are sold at the entrances.

Bike Tours in Maine, a service of Maine's Office of Passenger Transportation, offers 21 bike tours in the state.  With maps and travel tips, the site is run by the people in the Bike and Pedestrian section who are more than happy to answer specific questions from bicycle enthusiasts. 

Professional River Runners is a family owned business from West Forks, Maine offering professional whitewater rafting, family float trips, canoeing and winter guided river excursions in Maine and New York.  Their guides, averaging over ten years of river guiding experience, have a keen knowledge of the region's rivers including the Kennebec, Dead, Penobscot, Hudson and the Moose.  They offer a wide variety of rafting adventures for "Rookies to Riverbuffs." 

Acadia National Park is over 46,000 acres of stunning beauty in Maine.  The site from the National Park Service reports on current trail conditions, facilities, fees, camping information and a wealth of scientific, history and cultural information about the park and the region near Bar Harbor, ME.

During the summer the Acadia Mountain Guides Climbing School works from Bar Harbor, Maine (the year-round headquarters is in Orono) offering all levels of instruction in rock climbing, ice climbing, and mountaineering. Fully certified, since 1993, by the American Mountain Guides Association-the only service in the state with certified guides-much of their training is done at Mount Desert Island, home to Acadia National Park.  Their state-of-the-art instruction and guiding seeks to maximizes experience with an emphasis on safety for people and the and environment.  The site has information on guided climbs in Maine as well as challenging terrains in North and South America-with great pictures of the climbing pros in action. 

Maine Wilderness Tours, from Belgrade offers vacation planning and booking services for large or small groups. They specialize in outdoor adventure planning, tailored to individual vacation needs.

NH Outdoors-from Londonderry- provides good local resources on recreation, seasonal activities and things to do outdoors in New Hampshire. Vermont

Green Mountain Club is headquartered in Waterbury Center, Vermont but more precisely its over 7,000 members are focused on maintaining and preserving the state's 270 mile wilderness footpath called the Long Trail.  They are justifiably proud to note that the trail-they started building it in 1910-is the oldest long distance trail in the nation.  Running the length of Vermont, hikers have explored the entire trail in less than a month, some using the primitive shelters maintained by the club while most others use sections for a day trip or a weekend.

 

They also serve as advocates for Vermont's great outdoors with educational programs and proactive efforts that has helped to protect more that 16,000 "back country" acres of the Green Mountain State.   

 

The site is choke full of hiking and safety tips-the section on identifying, treating and preventing hypothermia is especially interesting-current trail conditions, maps and specific detail, with photographs, of the shelters on the trail.

 

Vermont Hang Gliding Association, is a group of hang gliding and paragliding pilots that enjoy flying off the mountains of Vermont and New England.  The offer information and connections for beginners to experts.

Vermont Cavers Association is about crawling round and exploring, what is under the Green Mountains. With some interesting pictures and an event listing.

Vermont Outdoor Guide Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the support of outdoor professionals and the stewardship of Vermont's lands and waterways.  Among the links and information on this grand New England site include guide services, adventure programs, lodging, equipment rental and retail shops, trail information, recreation organizations, outdoor ethics, standards for use and an event calendar.

The Vermont Association of Snow Travelers is the umbrella non-profit for over 145 state clubs-33,000 members strong-that helps to manage the sport in the state and importantly, maintain and groom the trails.
