Common Dreams is an Internet site from Portland, Maine that collects current views and information from a variety of international sources and passes the same to an ever growing readership.  Honestly and happily accepting the classification of internet activism, they are entirely funded (like another internet site we know) by members and supporter.   Their small staff is always looking for insights, comments and tangible measures of support.   Not a flash in the pan, they been around since 1997, they offer an important counter to the mass-market and predictable media stream that has come to dominate what used to be called Western Civilization.  They offer no talking heads but heads with some semblance of gray matter between their ears.  There is an unstated stipulation: you have to know how to read and think.  How revolutionary and how refreshing!

We learned about The Vermont Alliance of Independent Country Stores from a Sunday feature story in The New York Times no less.  The Alliance is a nonprofit that works to promote, and thus preserve, Vermont's independent, neighborhood stores in the state's more rural communities.  Once a mainstay of New England life, and often ideally and regrettable pictured in many Currier and Ives prints, the country store has become an economic buggy whip in today's turbo charged retail environment.  The nonprofit is organizing Vermont's Country Stores, many of which have web sites that are linked on the site, in combined efforts of purchasing, marketing, promotion and advertising.  We've been to a few of their member stores and we wish them well.  We'll also be adding many of their members to our New England Store in the very near future.

WESU Free-Form Radio broadcasts from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut and is one of the oldest stations of its kind in the country.  Started in 1939, the station has a decided eclectic bent although recently it has been suggested, with some controversy, that it become more closely affiliated with National Pubic Radio via a relationship with WSHU in Fairfield, Connecticut.  Truthfully described as a "Free-Form" station, it is a welcomed oasis from the prepackaged fare already dominating the radio dial.

Rosemary Wessel is an artist from Vermont, living now in Cummington, Massachusetts who has exhibited her work throughout New England and in New York City.

My work is an expression of individual states of perception experienced
along the path of spiritual growth. Many of these images involve the
shedding of mental and emotional baggage and striving toward a more
centered and connected life. Some depict spiritual breakthroughs to new
levels of understanding and awareness.

By working in a painted three-dimensional relief technique, I'm striving
to capture the blending of physical and spiritual-energetic aspects of
these experiences. The textures used help express the patterns of the
energies involved while the colors are useful in defining frequencies
and emotions. The anthropomorphic forms are there to suggest how these
energies are acting on and emanating from the people involved in each
situation.

We'll say candidly that her work, in both photography and painting, is pleasantly jarring.  She presents images of what is often familiar and reassuring with an eye for detail and skilled techniques that confirms in many of us, other suspicions of what is truly there.
